News Update Kilwa District BMU Network Participates in the Africa Climate Summit 2025

From September 5–10, 2025, the Kilwa District BMU Network took part in the Second Africa Climate Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The summit convened Heads of State, policymakers, development partners, civil society, and community leaders from across Africa to deliberate on the continent’s climate challenges and pathways toward sustainable solutions. The Kilwa District BMU Network’s participation was a significant milestone, as it provided a platform to amplify the voices of coastal communities and small-scale fishers who are at the frontline of climate impacts. Rising sea levels, declining fish stocks, and unpredictable weather patterns continue to affect livelihoods in coastal Tanzania, making it essential for grassroots organizations to be included in regional and continental climate discussions. During the summit, the Network engaged in dialogues on climate resilience, marine conservation, and community-based fisheries management, emphasizing the importance of investing in local initiatives that protect ecosystems while securing livelihoods. By sharing experiences from Kilwa, the Network demonstrated how community-led conservation and sustainable fishing practices can contribute to Africa’s broader climate and development goals. The participation also strengthened partnerships with other African organizations and development actors, opening doors for collaboration in areas such as blue economy development, financing for community climate action, and gender-inclusive adaptation strategies. The Kilwa District BMU Network remains committed to ensuring that local voices influence national, regional, and continental climate policies while building sustainable and resilient fisheries for the future.
