KILWA DISTRICT BMU NETWORK PARTICIPATES IN THE 11TH OUR OCEAN CONFERENCE IN KENYA, 18 June 2026
The conference marked a historic milestone as it was the first Our Ocean Conference ever hosted on African soil under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future.” Kilwa District BMU Network was represented by the Fisheries Co-management Officer, who joined global leaders, government representatives, scientists, civil society organizations, fishers, and private sector stakeholders in discussions on sustainable ocean management, marine conservation, and the Blue Economy. During the conference, participants explored key issues affecting ocean health, including sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas, climate change, marine pollution, maritime security, and the fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. Governments from around the world shared commitments and actions aimed at protecting marine resources while supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities. The conference also provided an important opportunity for the Kilwa District BMU Network to exchange experiences with fishers and community representatives from Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, and Guinea-Bissau. Discussions focused on common challenges facing small-scale fisheries, particularly IUU fishing, community-based fisheries management, and strategies for strengthening local fisheries governance. Participation in the conference enabled the Network to learn innovative approaches to marine conservation, build new partnerships, and strengthen regional collaboration for sustainable fisheries management in Tanzania. The Network was honored to witness the participation of high-level leaders, including the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, who emphasized the importance of sustainable ocean governance and Blue Economy development for the future prosperity of coastal communities. The Kilwa District BMU Network believes that the knowledge and connections gained during the conference will contribute significantly to ongoing efforts to improve fisheries co-management, marine conservation, and community livelihoods in Kilwa District. The Network extends its sincere gratitude to Blue Ventures for providing financial and logistical support that enabled participation in this important international event. Their continued partnership is helping strengthen community-led marine conservation and sustainable fisheries management in Tanzania.
